Massage Therapy
Massage is the manipulation of soft tissues and joints of the body to help reduce tension, decrease pain, promote healing, and prevent injury.
What to expect:
First appointments include time dedicated to assessment for any injuries or areas of concern, followed by discussion of treatment options and outcomes.
Time may also be reserved at the end of sessions to discuss any home exercise recommendations to help further promote recovery and help prevent future incidents of injury.
Any home care given will be accompanied by a demonstration and an emailed copy of the plan.
TMJ Treatment
The temporomandibular joint, more commonly known as the jaw, is a hinge joint that connects our jaw to the lower portion of the skull. Problems with the jaw and/or the muscles of the face that move it are referred to as temporomandibular joint disorders. They are commonly seen in individuals who:
Clench and grind their teeth
Participate in sports with frequent impact, such as football, rugby, or boxing
Have been in a motor vehicle accident or experienced whiplash
Common symptoms include:
Painful, sometimes sudden onset of pain in the jaw and surrounding areas
A clicking or popping sensation when moving the joint
Inability to fully open or close the mouth
Headaches
A ringing in the ears (tinitis)
Tension in the face, head, neck, and shoulders
Treatment:
Assessment and treatment of the joint and surrounding soft tissue can often alleviate these symptoms. This can include soft tissue release work through the neck, head, and face.
Intraoral massage:
In some situations intraoral massage is also appropriate to properly treat specific musculature that surrounds the jaw and can only be accessed within the mouth. If this type of treatment is required it will be discussed in advance so that the client has the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns and is able to provide informed consent. Proper personal protective equipment and sanitization protocols will be used at all times.
Pelvic Health
The pelvic floor refers to the group of deep muscles of the pelvis responsible for control of urination and defecation, sexual function, low back and pelvic stability. Like other muscle groups these muscles can be in dysfunction, whether that be from tension, being over/underuse, or trauma. Dysfunction of these muscles can cause a range of issues including urinary incontinence, constipation, pain during vaginal penetration, as well as low back and pelvic pain.
The aim of assessment and treatment is to:
Identify areas of concern within the pelvic floor and surrounding structures
Educate clients on their bodies
Identify potential triggers and contributing factors
Create a treatment plan together that will outline the course of care
Create a home exercise plan for clients to build towards rebalancing the musculature of the pelvic floor
Provide manual therapy to relieve tension in any areas contributing to pain or muscular imbalance
It is key to note that manual therapy (as provided by an RMT) for pelvic floor dysfunction does NOT include an internal treatment. Should there be an indication that internal treatment would be of benefit, the client will be referred to a pelvic floor certified physiotherapist.
Prenatal Care
During pregnancy our bodies go through a wide variety of changes. Massage during pregnancy can assist with:
Reducing pain from muscular tension and fatigue
Improve circulation
Decrease stress
Reduce swelling
Reduce nerve pain
Treatment is provided either in sidelaying positions or seated using pillowing techniques to keep the client comfortable and supported.
It is highly recommended to check with your primary health provider to be sure you have no contraindications prior to seeking massage therapy.
Exercise Guidance
In addition to manual therapy, an appropriate exercise program can be an effective part of healthy healing, recovery, and maintenance processes.
